The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation will not be celebrating Canada Day, July 1st, 2021.
Instead, neighbours and friends are asked to join in a Light Up the Lake event.
A candlelight vigil will take place and the Algonquin Drum will beat loud along the shores of Golden Lake.
Residents are asked to join in solidarity at 8:30pm by lighting candles and placing them at the end of a dock or along the shoreline.
The decision to not celebrate Canada Day comes after the discovery of hundreds of children at the sites of former residential schools across the country.
In an online post, the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan acknowledged all the sincere sympathies being extended to the community and say the display of friendship and support is greatly appreciated in this difficult time.
