There are important developments with the Global First Power small modular reactor project at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Chalk River site.
Last week it was announced that the initiative had received a preliminary nod on its application to prepare the site for an SMR project from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and has now advanced to the formal licence review stage.
Since its inception in the 1940s, AECL’s Chalk River Laboratories has hosted several first-of-a-kind nuclear reactors and technologies, so the Global First application continues the tradition- and others are being contemplated to demonstrate the economic viability of small modular reactors.
Global First Power is in stage three of CNL’s four-stage process, and with this recent CNSC announcement, the firm is the most advanced in its concept towards demonstration.
