The County of Renfrew is working with RideShark to help develop the first winterized on-demand community transit network focused on improved mobility solutions for rural areas.
This technology will help improve community accessibility, employment, health and social connections and sustainability outcomes.
President of RideShark, Sharon Lewinson says they plan to develop a community transit solution that can withstand harsh Canadian winters on semi-urban and rural roads. Since Renfrew County is the largest geographic County in all of Ontario, they’re the ideal partner to help create the innovative transportation solution.
Warden Debbie Robinson says the County of Renfrew is proud to be bringing such an innovative transportation solution to local residents and to host the world leading pilot and demonstration project in collaboration with several partners.
Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney says transportation technologies like this one help make it easier for people in rural and smaller communities to travel to their destinations, especially during winter.
The technology will be developed early in 2021 with fair weathers test runs in the fall and on-road winter conditions testing in January and February of 2022.
The County of Renfrew is currently working with RideShark to develop and deploy a ride share system to serve commuters, employers, residents, students, youth, and visitors to the county and facilitate travel around the region and beyond. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that service has been delayed until travel and gathering restrictions have been eased.
