The Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reporting that it’s Phising Season.
Phishing, with a “PH” is any email falsely claiming to be from an established legitimate organization such as a financial institution, business, or government agency.
Police say be aware of email and telephone scams.
A bogus email may request or direct the person to visit a specific website to update or provide personal and/or financial information and passwords.
Don’t be fooled.
You may also receive a telephone call from a person pretending to be someone from a government agency, such as the police, who then ask you for personal information including Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) and banking information.
Police aren’t interested in gathering this type of information.
Please attempt to verify the legitimacy of any caller before providing personal information, or simply hang up.
You can report the information to police, or online to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
