The health unit is warning local residents to brace for the heat this weekend.
Daytime temperatures on Saturday will get into the mid 30’s with the humidex. Sunday and Monday it’s expected to get near 40 degrees in the Ottawa Valley.
The Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) says extreme heat can put everyone at risk.
The risks are greater for older adults, infants, young children, people with chronic health conditions, people who work or exercise outdoors, homeless people and low income earners.
The local health unit is recommending you drink lots of cool liquids (even before you feel thirsty), wear loose fitting, light coloured clothing, take a cool shower or bath, avoid sun exposure, shade yourself and plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day.
The RCDHU says watch for signs and symptoms of heat illness which can include dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, headaches, rapid breathing and heartbeat, extreme thirst and decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine.
If you don’t feel better soon seek medical help immediately. You can get more safety tips online here.
