Black bears live in most parts of Ontario, and now that people are beginning to move around the Province, some hints on what to do if you encounter a bear may prove helpful.
Bears may not always be able to hear you, and hence avoid you- so make noise when you move through heavily wooded areas, especially if you are near a stream or waterfall.
Singing, whistling or talking will alert bears to your presence.
Watch for signs of a bear, such as tracks, claw marks on trees, or scat.
Be aware of your surroundings- if you are hiking, jogging, cycling, gardening, berry picking or camping you’ll be sharing the bush with bears who may not have been expecting you.
DO NOT wear headphones.
Keep your dog on a leash as a canine may actually lead a bear to your location.
Carry a whistle or an air horn, and know how to use bear spray.
If you are in the “back country” consider carrying a long-handled axe.
If you do spot a bear: Remain calm and do not run, climb a tree or try to swim away. Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight. Watch the bear and wait for it to leave. If it does not do so, wave your arms and make noise. If you’re able to get in to a building or your vehicle, do so.
