Nellie Kingsbury is a Valley girl, born in Renfrew but raised in Horton Township. She grew up on a farm and received most of her schooling at the old Horton School House, which still stands today on the property across from the municipal office. She attended high school in Renfrew at RCI, in 1961 she met the love of her life, and they are preparing to celebrate 59 years married in May.
They have four children; two boys and two girls, one of whom was her sisterʼs child. Nellie took him in and raised him as one of her own after her sister passed away. She lives in Horton Township with her husband Bob, a former councillor and Mayor for the township. She retired after a lengthy and fulfilling career with the Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew. After working with the elderly for so many years, Nellie was acutely aware of the lack of activities and supports needed to keep seniors connected to their community.
As a result, sheʼs been a driving force for the Golden Age Activity Centre since the very beginning and despite some serious health scares, continues to work there today.
