OPP in Eastern Ontario have a warning for area businesses.
Police say fraudsters are exploiting what are known as Card-Not-Present frauds to shop for some big ticket items.
The scammer will contact a business to place an order for a product by way of phone, email or website, with the idea of making the payment using a stolen credit card and counterfeit driver’s licences.
The business, assuming it to be a real order, asks for a driver’s licence, then processes the payment on stolen card.
The business then provides the product(s) through a shipping company or to an individual who will pick up the product using a rented van or trailer.
Eventually the real cardholder catches on and disputes the charge, and the business is responsible for reimbursement.
Police say the easiest way to thwart this is call the customer to verify their details before shipping the goods.
If your business has become a victim of the Card-Not-Present Fraud, contact your local police service or report online at antifraudcentre.ca.
