Some abusive behaviour is being reported at the waste disposal sites in North Algona Wilberforce. The township says there’s been confusion and frustration regarding the amount of amount of garbage that can be dropped off.
Recently a 2 bag limit was implemented and the $2.00 tipping fee was waived to allow staff to practice social distancing and stay 2 metres away from others. Residents can also recycle for free. Those who bring in 10 bags a week are creating a burden on all taxpayers. Without the $2.00 charge all residents pay directly for use at the waste disposal site. Exceptions to the two bag limit include helping shut in neighbours and people that only come once a month.
To try to control the amount of waste coming in attendants have started recording names and addresses and license plates when they can do so without close contact. The township says this is a way of identifying where people are coming from and is also a way of recording information on those that frequently abuse the system or staff.
The Township of North Algona Wilberforce says if abusive behaviour continues they will take action to protect their workers. Anyone with large quantities of waste are encouraged to go to the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre where tipping fees may apply.
