The Pembroke Regional Hospital (PRH) is working with provincial, regional and local partners to prevent further spread of COVID-19. Hospital President and CEO, Pierre Noel, says they confirmed their first confirmed case at the the PRH on Wednesday (March 25th).
Noel wasn’t able to provide details on the individual, but the health unit says it’s a female in her 90’s who contracted the virus while living at a retirement home in Pembroke with no travel history. Noel says this is an indication that we have community transmission of the virus. He adds the hospital was prepared for their first COVID-19 case.
The PRH has been declared the Regional Admissions Centre for COVID-19 patients in the County of Renfrew. Noel says this means if a patient meets the criteria, they would bypass their local hospital and be sent straight to Pembroke. He adds anyone who tests positive for the virus will be contained in one of the units at the Pembroke Regional Hospital.
This morning (March 26th), the PRH put out a call for help for medical supplies such as gloves, masks and gowns. Noel says at the time they currently have enough supplies to keep patients and staff safe and he thanks everyone for their generous donations so far. The hospital President and CEO says staff will be the hero’s when this is all over.
Noel says staff at the PRH come into work every day, go through screening and work hard even with all the uncertainty.
Some measures the Pembroke Regional Hospital has taken in response to COVID-19 include:
- Limiting entrance points
- Screening everyone who enters
- Restricting visitor access
- Prioritizing surgeries and diagnostic imaging bookings
- Free TV rentals for inpatients
