The province of Ontario has released a list of what workplaces can stay open during the state of emergency. Premier Doug Ford said all non-essential businesses in the province must close by 11:59 pm on Tuesday (March 24th) in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. A list of 74 essential services that can remain open was shared tonight. Any organization that provides services online, over the phone, or by mail will not impacted.
Health care workers, those who work in long-term-care facilities and social service workers have been deemed essential.
Gas stations, grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, pet stores, anywhere that sells alcohol or cannabis, restaurants that provide take out or delivery, motor vehicle repair shops, hardware stores, office supply and safety supply stores are among the list of places that can remain open.
Businesses that support the food supply chain, transportation providers, construction sites, telecommunication providers, banks, insurance companies and maintenance companies (plumbers, electricians, custodial workers, HVAC, mechanics and more) are able to stay open.
Postal services, utility providers, waste collection, laundromats, funeral homes, lawyers, real estate agents, moving services, hotels, motels and media companies such as radio stations and newspapers were also all listed under the essential services in Ontario.
Child care services for emergency workers will be permitted under the state of emergency as long as there’s under six children.
