A recent fire is under investigation. According to the Madawaska Valley Fire Department, they were called to a house fire on Combermere Road just after 11 o’clock Saturday night. The home, next to the Combermere Service Centre, was completely engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived. Fire fighters worked hard to contain the blaze, in an effort to prevent it from spreading to a 22 foot trailer full of 8-foot tires at the rear of the house, in addition there was a 500-gallon tank with diesel, 500 tanks with gasoline and 250-gallon tank of waste oil that needed to be protected. Tanker trucks shuttled 14 thousand gallons of water, the department responded with two trucks, 21 fire fighters and it took crews 2.5 hours to get the flames under control. Members remained on site until noon the next day to watch for and extinguish flare ups. The scene was cleared at 2pm. Officials say the house was completely destroyed with an estimated loss of 250 thousand dollars. No injuries were reported and the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
