Local paramedics have started testing people at home for the novel coronavirus or COVID-19. Chief Paramedic with the County of Renfrew, Mike Nolan, says they’ve seen an increase in calls to the health unit from concerned residents. Nolan recognizes that not everyone needs to be tested, but adds if there’s enough concern community paramedics will come to your home.
Nolan says we’re already starting to see a local impact with some events being cancelled and employers putting preventative measures in place. He adds event organizers should be mindful of potential community impacts and if you’re feeling sick you shouldn’t go out.
Nolan is hopeful that in Renfrew County the virus is easier to contain since we’re a rural community.
He adds public health has been clear about their messages to keep your distance from others, wash your hands frequently, don’t touch your face and cough or sneeze into your elbow. The Chief Paramedic says residents should remain calm, but be vigilant and prepared in the weeks to come.
