English Catholic teachers have announced another round of rotating strikes. A province wide walk out by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) is planned on Thursday, March 5. Last week the mediator called the bargaining parties back to the table and as a sign of good faith the union suspended rotating strikes. OECTA President Liz Stuart says instead of coming to the table with a plan to reach an agreement, the government continued to insist on its deep, permanent cuts. Stuart adds the Minister of Education has continued his attempts to mislead the public, by making baseless accusations against Catholic teachers and our Association, and by peddling the inaccurate claim that enhancements to our benefits plan is the sticking point in bargaining. Education Minister Stephen Lecce said earlier this week the Catholic teachers union was seeking a 6% increase to benefits. Full education consultation documents are available to members of the public, media, and opposition political parties, who can now apply to obtain a copy of the documents under the Tribunal Adjudicative Records Act. OECTA members started administrative job action on January 13 which will remain in effect until and after March 5. Catholic teachers also engaged in full withdrawals of service on January 21, February 4, and February 21, which saw 200,000 teachers and education workers across Ontario participate in a walkout.
