A viral post on social media over the weekend had everyone in Renfrew talking. On Friday, cardboard signs appeared in a Renfrew neighbourhood that asked a woman to “… come talk, I love u, I’m sorry”. The signs were zip-tied to stop signs at the intersection of Airth Boulevard and Opeongo Road. Some people were questioning if the signs are romantic, or signs of an abusive relationship so we decided to explore the topic a little further with an interview with Victims Services of Renfrew County. We have since heard from the man who posted the signs. He chooses to remain anonymous but says he wants to set the record straight – he put the signs up out of true love, and there was never any abuse in the relationship he had with the woman he directed the signs at. He says their relationship is now over and he wants to let the matter drop. The man was responding to an interview we did with Victims Services of Renfrew County after complaints and comments on social media that the woman may have been abused by her former partner. Acting executive director for the agency Lisa Oegema, says situations like this can be extremely difficult for the individual on the receiving end. Oegema says everyone has a right to choose if they want to speak to someone or not.
The signs have since come down and their story, and ours, has come to an end.
