It’s not spring yet, but flood talk has already started in Renfrew County. At the Bonnechere Valley council meeting yesterday (Feb. 4th), staff met to discuss preventative plans to protect local residents from flooding. Mayor Jennifer Murphy says with major floods two out of the last three years, the town wants to be prepared.
Murphy was happy to know they already have 18,000 sandbags ready to use in case of an emergency. The town had at least 5,000 more sandbags than they needed last year as a precautionary measure. Murphy says council is monitoring how much snow we have and the levels at Round Lake and Golden Lake.
Last year, residents started to experience flooding over the Easter long weekend in April. Emergency management coordinators from across the county will meet sometime in March with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and river operators to discuss water level conditions.
