The town of Renfrew is looking for an industry stewardship organization to fund the collection and proper disposal of dry cell batteries. Council heard, in a report, the provincial minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is directing Stewardship Ontario to wind up the current municipal household hazardous waste program. The organization will no longer fund the collection of single use, dry cell batteries. The responsibility for municipal hazardous waste is transitioning to the producer, meaning they will pay for the collection and recycling of their products. At this time they don’t know who will take over the program, but the landfill site will continue to collect batteries at the hazardous waste depot, which opens to the public in May. The Ontario Stewardship funding will end June 30 of this year.
