Scotiabank is holding a town hall meeting next week about the closure of the branch in Beachburg. Concerned residents are encouraged to attend a protest starting at 4:30pm to 5:00pm on Tuesday (Jan. 28th) outside of the bank before attending the town hall meeting. One of the Save our Scotiabank committee members, Gwen Bennett, wants as many people to attend the meeting as possible.
Bennett says they originally asked for the date of the meeting to be pushed back to have more time to look at the impact in the community.
At the Township of Whitewater Region council meeting on Wednesday night, a resolution was passed calling on the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Minister of Rural Economic Development to implement an immediate moratorium on the closure of rural banks to allow for a detailed review. The council report goes on to say banking services are essential to the community and for attracting economic development. Scotiabank plans to close the Beachburg Branch in June of this year and move customer accounts to Cobden. The bank will hold a meeting on Tuesday at 6:00pm at the Beachburg Public School.
