Hooray for Coaches Day is presented by Mickey’s Sports and Promotions. We are profiling Joel Corbin.
Joel Corbin is not a hockey dad, but he loves working with local youth and coaches a U18 competitive team with Renfrew Minor Hockey. He’s a young coach and this is his first year working independently with a team. Prior to this season, he coached with his father. He’s played the sport since he was young and when he turned 18, he said he wasn’t interested in beer league hockey and decided to take a spot behind the bench to share his skills and expertise with the next generation. Joel admits it can be challenging coaching youth, each hockey player has a different learning style and some players pick up the skills quicker than others. But Corbin says, when a player really wants to ‘get it’ they’ll learn it. Joel says he uses a loss as a teachable moment, reminding youth that life doesn’t always go their way, but you can’t give up.
