A crash on New Year’s Day outside of Deep River has resulted in serious charges for a Toronto man. The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP responded to a collision on Highway 17 near Cochrane Lane in Laurentian Hills on January 1st around 6:30 am. Police say the vehicle left the roadway, rolled, and came to rest down a steep embankment before it was towed from the scene. The driver was the only one in the vehicle at the time of the crash and not seriously injured. Alcohol was determined to be a factor in the collision and a search of the vehicle turned up a loaded handgun, cash, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl.
The OPP arrested and charged 38-year-old Alvin David Robinson of Toronto with:
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80mg
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
- Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
- Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm – two counts
- Transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner – three counts
- Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order – five counts
- Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
- Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – heroin
- Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl
The accused was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody until their next court appearance by way of video on January 9, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke. In relation to the driving charges the accused had their license suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.
