The Township of Whitewater Region is fighting to save the Scotiabank in Beachburg. Mayor Michael Moore says they’re incredibly disappointed with the decision to close the bank which is viewed as detrimental to the community, including residents, visitors, business owners and seniors without transportation.
At a council meeting earlier this month (December 4th), a resolution was passed to ask Scotiabank to reconsider their decision to close the Beachburg branch.
According to local historians, the Beachburg branch dates back to 1873 and the founding of the Bank of Ottawa which later amalgamated with the Bank of Nova Scotia. Scotiabank says the bank in Beachburg will be closed June 4th, 2020 with customer accounts automatically moved over to the Cobden branch.
A newly formed Save our Bank Committee has been formed to fight against the closure of the Beachburg Scotiabank. The committee includes the Township of Whitewater Region, Whitewater Bromley Community Health Centre, Riverview Seniors Social Club, Beachburg Lions Club, Westmeath & District Recreation Association and several prominent members of the community. The committee is requesting the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada hold a Town Hall meeting to hear from the community and the Lions Club is circulating a petition. Community members can also share concerns with the bank directly at 1-888-722-3970.
