A protest over cuts to education took place outside of our local MPP’s office. President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) in Renfrew County, Christian Sell, was joined by roughly a dozen teachers and education workers yesterday outside the office of MPP John Yakabuski. On Thursday, Sell says local secondary school teachers took a strike vote. He adds the results were counted overnight and will eventually be released by the union. He adds nobody wants to hear the word strike and they’re working to minimize the impact to local students.
He says teachers at public secondary schools will be in a position to strike on Monday. The OSSTF President says they’ve been trying to work out a deal with the province since the spring and nothing substantial has happened.
Sell adds the province has agreed to reduce the class size from 28 to 25, but also removed the cap size for classrooms. Over 100 signed letters were dropped off to the MPP voicing displeasure about the cuts to education. Sell says investments in our kids is an investment in our future and having fewer teachers is not a good thing.
