There are far too many accidental 9-1-1 calls happening in the area policed by the Renfrew OPP. The detachment says in one week alone in mid-September, officers responded to 31, 9-1-1 calls that were accidental or unnecessary. This takes a toll on police resources, which could result in a slower response to a real emergency, risking the safety of people who may need urgent help. Police are reminding residents that 9-1-1 is for Police, Fire or Medical emergencies when someone’s health, safety or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress. There is a non emergency number for the OPP that you can call when the matter is of a less urgent nature (1-888-310-1122). Police add they don’t give out weather conditions, you need to call Environment Canada for that. For road conditions and closures, call 5-1-1.
