Community Settlement Initiative aims to welcome new Canadians to Renfrew County

A new initiative has been launched to help newcomers to the area. The Community Settlement Initiative is a pilot project to address a need to offer services to suit the unique needs of those coming to Canada for the first time. Manager of the Community Settlement Initiative Chéla Breckon says they have coaches that deliver settlement, second language support and intercultural communications training free of charge.

The pilot project is for newcomers to 24 different municipalities in Renfrew and Lanark Counties. Breckon says they recently received funding from service delivery improvements at Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada to continue to offer the program until 2021. The program is managed by Algonquin College and a launch event is coming up at the Pembroke campus on Thursday (September 26th) from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
