Long term care home responds to complaint about conditions

Some of the rooms at Marianhill long-term-care home in Pembroke are heating up with the hot and humid weather. A Facebook post on the matter was getting a lot of shares last week. In it, a family member of a resident living there says at 8:00 pm on Thursday night, her mother’s room was 33 degrees. The post goes on to say the residents are not allowed to install A/C in their rooms. The CEO of Marianhill, Linda Tracey, says this is because the aging facility is not equipped to handle the load.

 

Tracey says the second floor and west wing of the building are noticeably warmer. Tracey says for the time, being anyone who asks for a tower fan or Dyson cooling fan is being provided one. She adds the safety and comfort of residents living at Marianhill is the top priority of staff. All of the common areas in the building, including the front lobby area, auditorium, dining rooms and lounges are air conditioned and accessible to all residents. Staff provide assistance to those with mobility issues getting to these areas. The CEO says the lack of A/C in the rooms is an example of why Marianhill needs to be redeveloped. As a part of the $24.5-million dollar renovation and expansion of the long-term-care home, each resident will be able to control the heating and cooling from their own unit.
