Boaters along the Ottawa River are being reminded of the possibility of encountering Unexploded Explosive Ordnance (UXO) near Petawawa. Garrison Petawawa has issued a press release cautioning boaters to obey all signs and buoys along the Garrison bank of the Ottawa River from Black Point to Black Bear Beach. The affected area is 27 hectares of beaches and 167 hectares of river bottom. The most advanced detection technologies are limited because of the sandy beaches, recent high water levels and the constant flow of the river, so there can never be an absolute certainty that all UXO hazards have been detected and removed. The Garrison says if you find something that looks like it might be an unexploded device to not disturb it, remember the location and try to mark it without touching the item if possible. You are also asked to call 911 or Military Police (613-687-5555) immediately to report what you have found.
