In a bid to save money, the town of Arnprior is reducing the amount of sidewalk snow removal done in the winter. Council has removed 13 streets from the list of what it calls “priority routes”. Priority routes are those streets which are plowed within one or two nights, and are sanded and salted. Meanwhile, those streets now designated “non-priority” are only cleared with the wing of the plow until the snow can no longer be pushed back. After that, they may no longer be maintained for the rest of the winter. Town council has also opted to do the work internally, rather than pay a contractor, also saving money despite the additional labour costs. Once all of the factors are added up, the changes amount to an annual savings of just over $72,000. The 13 streets that will now no longer get the full winter maintenance include Frieday Street, Staye Court Drive, Bridge Street, Arthur, Charles, William from Edward to Ida, Edward Street, Atkinson, Landrigan, Short Road, Moe Robillard, Russell from McGonigal to Mill Lane and McGonigal Street from Daniel to Russell.
