The Township of Admaston-Bromley has recognized three outstanding individuals in the community for its annual awards.
Bev Patterson is Senior of the Year.
Patterson was born and raised in Admaston/Bromley, and grew up on the family farm on Foy Road.
Together, she and husband Ken continued on the farming journey and had three children, Lisa, Billy and Bradley.
As a high school teacher at RCI, then a supply teacher after retirement, Bev has touched countless young lives in the area.
She spent 20 years spent on the Renfrew Junior Fair Committee and 15 years as a 4H leader.
Bev is also a member of our Emergency Management Committee and Community Control Group who are responsible for the Township’s Emergency Response Plan in the event of an emergency.
The Admaston-Bromley Citizen of the Year is Dawn Afelskie.
Dawn moved to our area from Vancouver in 1994 with her husband Robert.
Her career as a manager, marketer and director in the male dominated animal feed industry is an impressive accomplishment.
Dawn joined the Douglas Recreation Committee in 1998 and was a very important and valued contributor to the success and growth of this community group.
She has organized Christmas Packages to local families in need for more than 10 years. She also participates and assists in the Douglas St. Pats’ Parade and many other community events.
Chosen as Junior Citizen of the Year is Kathleen Barr.
Kathleen is currently enrolled at Ryerson University in Toronto. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in communication.
Kathleen was born and raised on a 5th generation farm in Douglas with her parents and two older sisters.
In 2009, her sister Jill was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and Kathleen was quick to realize that being a part of such a caring community is indeed a gift. The fundraising efforts by Kathleen and her family towards Cancer Research became much more personally motivated.
While attending Opeongo High School Kathleen showed strong and effective leadership skills as the Prime Minister on her Student Council, and as the chair of Recreation & Healthy Active Living Leadership group.
She was an active participant in Healthy Futures, and is a DEN (Dream, Empower and Nurture) Leader, a LINK Crew Leader, chairperson for their Terry Fox fund raising initiative, and an active participant on various school athletic teams.
Kathleen has received the “Lieutenant Governor’s Volunteer Award” for all her volunteering efforts and was selected as Miss Teen Ontario East in 2015.
