The County of Renfrew and Whitewater Region township have lowered flags at their buildings to half-mast as they honour the life of former Warden Don Rathwell.
Officials say that Rathwell died surrounded by family at the age of 90 on Friday, October 16.
A long-standing councillor for the Whitewater Region, Rathwell represented the township at County Council as its Reeve from 2004 to 2014 and was elected as Warden in 2009 and 2010.
Current Warden Jennifer Murphy says that she is deeply saddened by Rathwell’s death. “Don and I shared a very special bond, one that went far beyond our roles in municipal politics. He was a dear friend, a mentor, and someone who held a very special place in my heart. I will always treasure our conversations, our laughter, and the memories we made along the way.”
“Don dedicated so much of his life to public service, and his contributions to Renfrew County will not be forgotten,” adds Murphy.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to Don’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
