Residents across Renfrew County and the Pontiac region of Quebec can expect to see and hear military helicopters operating at low altitudes over the coming weeks.
The Canadian Armed Forces says the Basic Tactical Aviation Course 2602 will be conducted from Canadian Forces Base Petawawa from Oct. 13 to Nov. 10.
Training will take place throughout the region, with Royal Canadian Air Force CH-146 Griffon and CH-147F Chinook helicopters operating at low altitudes within authorized training areas.
In Ontario, low-level flights are planned for Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards, the Madawaska Valley, Laurentian Hills, Pembroke and Whitewater Region. Training is also planned for Mansfield-et-Pontefract, Sheenboro, Lac-Nilgaut and L’Isle-aux-Allumettes in Quebec.
The military says several landowners have voluntarily allowed training on their properties to provide course participants with more realistic operational environments.
The exercises will involve armed infantry and simulated enemy forces, along with blank ammunition and pyrotechnics such as flares and smoke.
Simulated enemy personnel will be identifiable by orange hunting caps and orange or yellow reflective armbands on their left arms. Military vehicles may also be visible throughout the region.
The Canadian Armed Forces says all weapons used in the exercises will be clearly identified, and blank ammunition will only be used in designated training areas and authorized locations.
Local authorities will be notified of simulation activities, and the military says there is no cause for public concern.
The course is designed to develop the leadership, decision-making and tactical skills needed to plan and carry out complex helicopter operations.
Flying will take place during daylight hours and will depend on weather and other conditions. The military says all RCAF flying operations are carefully planned and closely supervised to protect public safety.
