Some of the toughest athletes from across the region have braved the rugged wilderness of Calabogie Peaks.
Competitors gathered at the ski resort to take part in this past weekend’s stop on the Spartan Obstacle Course Race schedule, challenging themselves to an unforgiving course set up along the base of Dickson Mountain and the shores of Calabogie Lake.
Mariana Smith says she came to the Valley after first getting into the Spartan Races through a team-building exercise she joined at her husband’s workplace.
The Calabogie course proved to be a tough task for participants, with its steep ascents and tough terrain leaving Smith winded despite training for an upcoming half-marathon. It also requires plenty of grit and physical toughness to conquer obstacles like heavy carries, high-grip climbs, and a chilly plunge into the lake.
Smith was also thrilled with what she calls an atmosphere of camaraderie at the event, with participants from all age groups motivating and encouraging each other along every stretch of the race.
The Spartan Race weekend is expected to return to Calabogie Peaks this time next year.
