A parent support network that began with informal conversations in hospital waiting rooms has grown into a longstanding mental health organization serving families across Eastern Ontario.
PLEO was formally incorporated as a charitable organization in 2000 under the leadership of Cynthia Clark after years of parents supporting one another while navigating their children’s mental health challenges. The organization introduced monthly parent support meetings at CHEO and advocated for greater family involvement in treatment planning at a time when caregivers had limited input.
Family Peer Supporter Bonnie Schryer says PLEO’s work grew naturally from families sharing lived experiences, and there are challenges in getting the word out to as many people affected as possible.
Bonnie points out that there are three main services available for those in need, with the NAV Line being the original offering introduced several years ago. The Navigator Line is a phone service for those in immediate need of assistance and is available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Webinars are also a popular means of support, as is in-person assistance for those who prefer that approach.
These sessions take place at the Ma-te-Way Centre in Renfrew and are open to caregivers of youth aged 12 to 25, with no registration required.
Schryer says that spirit led to the creation of a closed support group, developed in partnership with The Robbie Dean Centre, to help families better understand and cope with youth experiencing suicidal ideation. She says the program provides a safe space where caregivers can connect with others facing similar challenges.
Coming this fall, in partnership with The Robbie Dean Centre, will be sessions specifically for parents and caregivers of loved ones experiencing suicidal ideation. These sessions do require online registration. Bonnie sums up PLEO in one simple notion.
