The Renfrew County District School Board says more of its schools are being recognized for environmental leadership through a national program aimed at promoting sustainability and climate action.
The board says 20 schools are now enrolled in EcoSchools Canada, which provides a framework for environmental learning and stewardship initiatives. Chief executive officer Kristen Niemi of the RCDSB explains:
Seven schools earned certification this year, with Killaloe Public School and Rockwood Public School receiving platinum status. Admaston, Central, Eganville and District, and Pine View public schools earned gold certification, while Highview Public School received bronze.
The certifications recognize efforts in areas including energy conservation, waste reduction, composting, environmental stewardship and curriculum-based learning. Niemi emphasizes that the EcoSchool approach is well within Board mandates for education standards and dovetails nicely with existing curriculums.
Within the new rubric, Niemi says that there are more and more students who are taking on leadership roles within what she calls “Eco Teams” where students take on various environmentally sound initiatives perhaps for the first time in their lives.
Activities such as worm composting and waste minimization are also on the table for students to further better understand the importance of eco friendly practices in daily life.
The board says the growing participation in the program aligns with its strategic priorities, including student well-being, Indigenous education and developing future-ready skills.
