Charges have been laid in the May homicide of a Greater Madawaska resident after a homicide investigation uncovered a potential threat in another province.
The Renfrew OPP were called to a home on Lanark Road in Calabogie just before 6:00 pm on Wednesday, May 6, where officers found one person dead. They would later identify the victim as 61-year-old Geraldine Fulcher and deem the death a homicide.
Further investigation indicated ties to threats made targeting a business and its employees in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, where a suspect expressed a willingness to engage in a violent confrontation with police.
The Winnipeg Police Service was alerted by the OPP that the suspect was believed to be in Winnipeg and possibly in possession of a firearm at around 1:10 pm CST on Tuesday, May 12. Officers were able to locate and detain the suspect without incident within the hour, seizing a shotgun and ammunition, as well as additional weapons and three jerrycans of gasoline.
Members of the OPP Criminal Investigations Branch attended the WPS Headquarters to interview the suspect in connection with the homicide in Greater Madawaska after being alerted to the arrest by the WPS Major Crimes Unit.
Graham Mlodozenec, 52 years old, of Sudbury, Ontario, was transferred into OPP custody on Monday, June 15, and charged with both first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The Winnipeg Police Service also charged him with the following:
- Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
- Possession of a weapon
- Uttering threats—causing death or bodily harm
- Uttering threats—damaging property
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Careless storage of firearms, ammunition, prohibited weapons, or devices
- Possession of incendiary material
The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on Monday, June 22.
OPP CIB Detective Inspector Jason Winser thanks the public for their patience, noting the investigation “demonstrates the seriousness with which police respond to potential threats and the importance of strong cross-provincial collaboration.” Through combined police efforts, an arrest has been made in Geraldine’s homicide, and additional harm was prevented.” He also thanked the Winnipeg Police Service for their swift action.
