The head of Renfrew PRIDE wants to renew her focus on visibility, advocacy, and education for the local 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Chris Kyte is thankful to the Town of Renfrew for their continued support for events like Saturday, June 13’s Renfrew PRIDE Picnic in Low Square, which placed their message of inclusion and diversity in a space where the town’s policy and education meet at a time when their more vulnerable members are feeling the pressure of what have been a few difficult years.
She adds that the event brought about a rollercoaster of emotions, as the community groups and residents who not only showed up to celebrate Pride but also fully sponsored the day have encouraged her to find her voice after her own struggles.
Part of the proceeds raised from the picnic will go to a planned refresh of the downtown Pride sidewalk, which has faded since first being installed.
There are hopes to work with the town council following the fall election on a more sustainable Pride project, but Kyte says that it’s crucial that the sidewalk remain in place until then as a continuing symbol of inclusion within the community.
While the annual Pride picnic is a day of fun and celebration, it is also a reminder that the 2SLGBTQIA+ community continues to fight for recognition.
