A stranded ATV rider was found safe after a late-night search on the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail in Laurentian Hills Township.
The Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police says officers were called the evening of June 1 after a man reported he was lost on the trail. Police say the man had been riding an ATV when it became immobilized, leaving him stranded.
Just after 1 a.m. on June 2, OPP located the rider with help from several emergency teams.
The search included Upper Ottawa Valley officers, OPP Aviation Services, the Emergency Response Team, the OPP canine unit and Renfrew County Paramedic Services, including its Sierra Team.
Police say the man was spotted by the OPP helicopter. Once he was reached, paramedics assessed him at the scene and he was released.
OPP say the incident is a reminder for anyone heading into the wilderness or taking part in risky recreational activities to plan ahead.
Police recommend riders know their limits, choose routes that match their skills and fitness level, and avoid travelling beyond their experience.
They also suggest leaving a route plan with a friend or family member, carrying a cellphone or satellite phone, and packing emergency supplies such as food, water, a flashlight, warm clothing, a map and first aid kit.
