Canadian Nuclear Laboratories has received a major funding injection to continue its ongoing project to improve the infrastructure at Chalk River Laboratories.
CNL announced late last week that it had received $2.2 billion in infrastructure funding from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, a crown corporation that funds various projects across the nuclear industry, to continue its efforts to revitalize the facility.
According to CNL’s Director of Corporate Communications, Philip Kompass, this is the second wave of funding for this project.
According to Kompass, the Chalk River Laboratories site — which is over 70 years old at this point — is starting to reach the point in its life cycle where various systems need to be revitalized, including various support facilities and office buildings.
Kompass also said a significant portion of this wave of funding will go towards designing the Advanced Nuclear Materials Research Centre, which will be one of the largest nuclear research facilities in the country once it’s completed.
Regarding job creation, Kompass says he expects CNL’s workforce to remain stable for the immediate future, but does expect to see contracting and subcontracting jobs created as a result of this funding.
