A new triplex built in Renfrew could be the template for developing affordable and sustainable housing in the Ottawa Valley.
County officials were joined by Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Billy Denault and Renfrew Mayor Tom Sidney on Tuesday, May 19, as they cut the ribbon on a new supportive three-unit home on Francis Street, replacing the old wartime home on the lot with barrier-free options for residents on the Renfrew County Housing Corporation’s current wait list.
Speaking at the ceremony, Warden Jennifer Murphy said the project reflects how strong communities are built by working together.
Development and Property Committee chair James Brose noted that the $613,355 construction, a collaboration between multiple county departments and the governments of Canada and Ontario, demonstrates how the county can utilize space in existing neighbourhoods across the region to add more housing options.
Meanwhile, Community Services chair Anne Giardini added that the finished product represents more than just a new building but the opportunity for people to put down roots and build better futures.
Priority will be given to individuals with medical accessibility needs, and residents will have access to supports tailored to their unique needs when they move in on June 1st.
