Former Renfrew Mayor Sandi Heins pays her respects at the National Day of Mourning monument in Renfrew
Friends and family of people killed, injured, or made ill on the job gathered for a sombre moment in Renfrew.
The Renfrew and District Labour Council was joined by town officials and community members at the National Day of Mourning monument in O’Brien Park on Tuesday, April 28th, to recognize the day, which Council president Ben Treidlinger says ranks beside Labour Day as the two most important dates on their calendar.
He adds that the community is its own best advocate when it comes to safe working conditions.
Among those in attendance were former Renfrew Mayor and Councillor Sandi Heins and current Mayor Tom Sidney, who both spoke to the need to hold employers accountable when it comes to keeping local workers safe on the job. Sidney encourages those who missed the memorial to visit the monument on their own time.
The Renfrew event was part of a broader effort by Treidlinger and the labour council to honour the National Day of Mourning, including a similar memorial in Pembroke that evening.
