On Sunday, May 3, Hospice Renfrew is organizing its largest fundraiser of the year; Hike for Hospice.
It’s an event where volunteers and residents gather to support Hospice Renfrew which provides palliative and end-of-life care for free for residents.
Dorothy is a longstanding volunteer with the organization and for 17 years she has been sitting at the registration table at the start of the hike.
Dorothy said it’s a nice feeling to see walkers and runners alike continue to show their support over the years.
She has met many people working behind the table and notices the repeat supporters which Dorothy said shows how caring the community is.
The volunteers themselves also provide a big helping hand to Hospice Renfrew.
According to their website, volunteers contribute more than 6,000 hours annually to this service, which volunteer and events coordinator, Debroah Coelho, said is a very important part of the yearly hike.
This year the hike starts from the Hospice parking lot at 2:00 p.m. (459 Albert Street, Renfrew, K7V 1V8)
Coelho said the increasingly popular Hike for Hospice is a great way to show the community what goes on at Hospice Renfrew.
That support goes both ways; Coelho said typically the organization does not interact with the community outside of Hike for Hospice.
Hike for Hospice kicks off on May 3, and here’s what you need to know:
- Registration will be happening on-site starting at noon (12 p.m.)
- Runners on the five-kilometre loop will begin at approximately 1:55 p.m. with the three-kilometre walk starting shortly after at 2:00 p.m.
- Bacon on a Bun will be on-site (CASH ONLY)
- Other entertainment including bouncy castles and face painting
