Whitewater Region Mayor Neil Nicholson is reassuring residents that they can rely on support from the township while spring flooding affects the community.
Addressing residents in an update on social media, Nicholson acknowledges the impact that the increased flows along the Ottawa River have had in recent days and promises that township staff will continue sharing information with the public as the situation develops.
The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board’s latest update suggests that water levels are on par with flooding from 2023 and will plateau or slowly decline depending on how much precipitation falls in the local watershed.
More information is expected on Thursday. In the meantime, Nicholson says the staff will continue to communicate with the community as washouts happen on local roads.
Township and emergency services in the area have been stretched to respond to the flooding but remain available to help, including local firefighters who continue to prepare sandbags at the Westmeath garage each evening.
Sand and sandbags have also been placed near affected areas for resident use.
The Township office wishes to hear from residents facing flooding to better organize support where it is needed, available by calling 613-646-2282, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and after-hours at 613-646-2282, Option 9.
