Communities along the Ottawa River continue to deal with rising water levels. Flooding is reported in numerous municipalities, and sandbagging is going on around the clock as homeowners try to save their homes from major damage. On the Quebec side of the Ottawa River, Fort Coulonge decided to declare a state of emergency on Sunday. Speaking to myFM News on Monday, Mayor Pierre Cyr said things are actually looking up. The rate at which the water was rising has finally slowed down after a scary end to the week.
Cyr says a massive sandbagging effort has him feeling confident that they can handle things for now.
The old historic Red Bridge is currently closed because the water is actually touching the structure and they’re monitoring the White Bridge for now. Meanwhile, in Mansfield-et-Pontefract, the Emergency Response Plan was activated as the Colounge River burst its banks.
Seventy residents were ordered to evacuate their homes Sunday night, as their homes became surrounded by water.
