The Algonquin Anishinabe Nation and Senators Sports & Entertainment have announced they are collaborating on plans to build a lasting economic partnership, guided by a shared vision for the development of lands at LeBreton Flats, in line with the area’s master concept plan.
Chief of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, Greg Sarazin, says the proposed land deal at LeBreton Flats — which is expected to be the site of a new home for the Ottawa Senators — has been a long time in the making and is now coming to fruition:
A recent press release issued by the Ottawa Senators last week reads, in part:
“Through ongoing discussions, both parties have identified a strong alignment in their commitment to creating Ottawa–Gatineau’s next great gathering place — one that recognizes and honours the deep cultural and historical significance of these lands to the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation.”
Sarazin notes this is only the first step in what will be a lengthy process, with more specific information expected in the weeks ahead:
Sarazin says he first became aware of the possibility of the team’s move in early 2023, and since then there has been extensive back-and-forth discussion, culminating in the first official release of information last week.
He adds that when he had the opportunity to welcome King Charles to Canada in May of last year, he reminded His Majesty that he was on unceded, unsurrendered traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation. Sarazin believes that moment helped draw the attention of the Senators and contributed to advancing further discussions.
More information on the proposed deal, including timelines and additional details on the partnership, will be included in a forthcoming memorandum of understanding.
