Plans are in the works to expand a local program supporting unsung heroes caring for loved ones at home.
Katie Bromley, a social worker with Renfrew Victoria Hospital, says their caregiver education program will return next month, providing informal caregivers in the Ottawa Valley the practical knowledge, emotional support, and skills needed to ensure comfort and care to family members and friends with serious illnesses.
After working with an enthusiastic group face-to-face in January, her goal is to make the program more accessible this April.
The six-week session offers the expert advice of experienced social workers and nurses on how to navigate the healthcare system, advanced care planning, safe mobility, grief support, and caregiver self-care, all topics that have resonated with participants.
Bromley adds that the program has also provided a space for caregivers to meet and socialize in a compassionate and informed space with people from Renfrew and the surrounding areas, all facing similar challenges.
The next session of the caregiver education program runs from April 8th to May 13th. Those interested in taking part can register by calling 613-432-4851 ext. 513 or by email.
