Supporters of Renfrew’s Gillan family will show their son, Lucas, a little love as he remains on the mend.
Lucas continues his recovery after receiving a live kidney transplant in late February.
His cousin Michelle Beauchamp says friends and neighbours will gather at the Horton Community Centre this Sunday, March 22nd, to celebrate the many people who offered their money, support, and even their bodies to find a match before it was too late.
The Love for Lucas fundraiser will also help cover the mounting costs that come with his ongoing recovery and treatment, which Beauchamp says adds up when you factor the travel, lodging, and food that come with being a rural patient.
Guests will be treated to an afternoon of compassion, community, light refreshments, and dancing to live music from the Kyle Felhaver Band.
The only thing missing might actually be Lucas himself, as the Gillans have remained largely isolated to avoid any complications while doctors keep track of how his body handles the new organ post-operation.
Despite the fatigue, Beauchamp says the Gillans are blown away with the overwhelming support they have received since first sharing their story on social media last year, noting that the family are usually the people pitching in to help the community.
On top of a great time with the community, the party will also feature a table where guests can learn more about the Trillium Gift of Life Network and how to sign up as organ donors.
Only 35% of Ontarians are currently registered as consenting donors, something Lucas’ family says is not good enough while someone in the province waiting for a life-saving transplant dies every three days.
