Federal funding for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited is set to decline this year for the first time in more than a decade, according to the federal government’s main spending estimates for 2026–27.
The documents show AECL will receive just over $1.7 billion, down from $1.94 billion in 2025–26.
Of that total, about $1.14 billion is earmarked for nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management, while roughly $559.6 million will support nuclear laboratories.
Officials say the funding reflects ongoing work to manage legacy waste and maintain Canada’s nuclear research infrastructure.
