The crowd looks on after the big finale | Mik Horvath/MBC
Today (March 10) Renfrew was the host of the EOSSAA A/AA Boy’s Hockey Tournament.
It’s a competition where the best of Eastern Ontario’s secondary schools battle it out on the ice for the top.
It’s the first time since RCI’s successful 2006 hosting of the tournament here in Renfrew, but officials are saying the second ice pad have made operations even smoother.
Saint Joseph’s High School (SJHS) here in Renfrew had the honours of organizing the tournament, tournament convener and SJHS educator Mike McMahon said hosting the tournament at home promotes what SJHS offers.
SJHS had previously organized the tournament, however, due to the single ice pad before the Ma Te Way upgrades, everyone was busing into Arnprior.
The high schoolers representing Renfrew are also enrolled in SJHS’ Hockey Program; a revered and unique school program focused on hockey education.
McMahon said hosting the tournament here in Renfrew also helps to promote and grow the hockey program.
The hockey program also bridges the social gap between the different age groups at school.
SJHS went on to the final of the tournament after placing first in their pool.
Unfortunately, the hometown heroes ultimately accepted defeat against the Sydenham team in the tournament final.
