International Women’s Day officially occurred Sunday, March 8, and we observe International Women’s Day on that date to honour the historic 1917 women’s strike in Russia, when workers demanded “Bread and Peace,” helping ignite the Russian Revolution and securing women’s right to vote. The day also celebrates women’s ongoing struggle for rights, equality, and achievements worldwide — a tradition first proposed by Clara Zetkin in 1910 and later recognized by the United Nations.
Here in Pembroke and right across the Valley, it was a day for women of all races, colours and creeds to stand together in solidarity and celebrate the countless achievements women have made over time.
Kristen Neimi is the Director of Education for the RCDSB, and she says that the day holds special meaning for her on many levels, both professional and personal:
Neimi goes on to say that, from a professional standpoint, she is responsible for helping guide the next generation of female leaders who are sitting at school desks today, learning how to become leaders of the future.
Lori Norwood is the Director of the Renfrew County Sexual Assault and Rape Crisis Support Centre, and International Women’s Day is a day when she feels women everywhere deserve to be heard and celebrated. She says the day holds special meaning for the many survivors of sexual assault she has come into contact with over the years:
Norwood goes on to say that women everywhere need to live in an environment where dignity and respect are non-negotiable.
Pembroke City Council’s lone female member, Pat Lafreniere, speaks fondly of the lessons her mother taught her growing up, and she pauses to recall these lessons every International Women’s Day.
Pat cautions younger women today not to allow themselves to be caught up in the notion that the world is full of barriers, noting that many of these perceptions can come from within individuals themselves.
A special thank you to Kristen Neimi, Lori Norwood and Pat Lafreniere for taking the time to share their valuable insights to mark the occasion of International Women’s Day 2026.
