The Renfrew and District Food Bank’s supporters will brave the elements this Saturday, February 28th, to rally the community in their effort to keep families in need fed.
Joanne Hnatykiw, one of the food bank’s volunteers, is expecting a crowd to join them as they parade through the downtown core as part of this year’s Coldest Night of the Year, a nationwide fundraiser that she believes will be a fantastic chance for locals to show support outside of a quiet donation.
While the food bank has set a goal to raise $20,000 ahead of this Saturday, Hnatykiw says even more important than the money will be their chance to spread the word about their mission to alleviate food insecurity and poverty across Renfrew and the surrounding area.
That mission has been increasingly important for the community as the food bank fights to keep up as prices continue to rise at grocery stores across Renfrew and all of the Ottawa Valley and more residents struggle to keep their pantries and fridges adequately stocked.
The procession will depart from the Food Bank, 8 Argyle St. South, Saturday night starting at 4:00 pm, and while a mild forecast means it won’t literally be the coldest night of the year, Hnatykiw still suggests bundling up for the trip.
You can donate to the cause or pledge to volunteer during their walk through the downtown core through the Coldest Night of the Year website.
