If you’ve got a toonie in your pocket today, pull it out and wish it happy Birthday.
On this day 30 years ago, the two dollar coin replaced paper bills of the same denomination in Canada.
The new coin followed the introduction of the loonie in 1987.
Originally consisting of a copper alloy and a pure nickel outer ring, the Royal Canadian Mint modernized Canada’s highest-value circulation coin by changing its composition to multi-ply plated steel in 2012.
Advanced security features were also added to its surface.
In celebration of the toonie’s 30th birthday, the Mint has issued a Collector’s Edition Non-Circulation Special Wrap Roll, each retailing for $89.95 CAD. Order it at www.mint.ca, or check with your local post office for product.
